A 275 Gallon Food Grade IBC Tote Container is the ideal solution for a water collection or storage or liquid storage or transfer system. A 275 gallon tote will store and provide 5 or 6 times the volume of water than a standard 50 gallon rainwater barrel and costs less than one rainwater barrel. IBC Tote containers are useful in many ways:

  • As the population grows and electricity and water costs rise, preserving water by collecting and using rain water sounds more like it might be a good idea! Public water and wells use electricity to pump the water throughout your home and property. Without water, our homegrown fruits, vegetables, and other plants cannot survive.

  • In many cases, water or electricity is not readily or easily available where water transfer is necessary to provide water to your plants or animals. Rain water can be collected from roof tops or water can be siphened from wells, rivers, creeks, or ponds.

  • In other cases, large volume construction type liquid solutions must be transferred or made available at new construction sites such as sealants and oils or even fresh water.

We water our gardens with rain barrels and totes, so we know what works and what doesn't work! We mainly use totes since they capture and store a lot more rain water than barrels, we use high flow valves for maximum water flow to save time, we cover our totes with a uv protector to prevent algae build up and prolong the life of the plastic bottle, and we use tote and barrel water filters to collect the cleanest rain water possible.

We started collecting rain water with several 50 gallon rainwater barrels. One rainwater barrel actually costs a lot more than one 275 gallon IBC tote, the barrels only provide about 45 gallons of water, run out of water quickly, and their cheap faucet trickles water way too slow for comfort. Then, we purchased a few older very used totes where the factory main shut-off valves leaked, the plastic bottles seemed brittle, and the cages were rusted or dented which prompted us to consider a like new tote for a few dollars more and long term gain.

You can find fairly good, old, used, food and non-food grade totes for less money, but what you might get is less-life totes with possibly environmental or leaking issues costing extra to repair and maintain and are likely to be short lived with rust and dents. If you want the best for your family and plants long term, buy the best and you will not be sorry or disappointed and your tote will have a resale value in the future.

You will need a base for the tote. The base should be 40" x 48". The height of the base matters in natural gravity psi and comfortability to access the water faucet without constant bending. The tote placed on the edge of a raised porch can work as well. We have built two types of tote bases that work very nicely:

  • BLOCKS: Several 6" x 8" x 16" concrete blocks stacked to desired height with three 2" x 6" x 48" pressure treated boards on top of the 3 rows of concrete block. Concrete blocks are fast and do not require any drilling, sawing, or deck screws, but are heavy to handle and can be more expensive than a wooden built frame depending on how high you need to go. One row for 8" height requires 9 concrete blocks, two rows for 16" requires 18, three rows for 24" requires 27 blocks and so on. Cost adds up quickly to about $50.

  • WOOD: A pressure treated wood base with 4" x 6" x 24" legs and 2" x 6" frame (40" x 48"). One 4" x 6" x 8' pressure treated wooden post can be cut into four 2 foot legs. This option requires four 2" x 6" x 8" pressure treated boards and one 6" x 4" x 8" pressure treated post for a whopping total of about $50 plus screws $10.

We have seen tote bases for sale on Amazon or you can place the tote on a raised porch or any raised surface or truck or trailer, all options will work just fine.

We hunt, track, purchase, and sell only the highest quality, food grade totes available within reasonable distance to save you valuable time searching for a like new hassel free tote to start storing potable water or collecting rain water immediately.

What we are learning is that it is becoming more difficult to find like new clean totes with the standard coarse threads on the main valve for a reasonable price and more homeowners and companies are buying our totes than we anticipated. What does that mean? That means that we are constantly on the hunt for the best totes available and making many trips to our suppliers as new clean totes are available.

Our totes are in like new condition, high quality, food grade, clearly labeled, contained organic caster oil (corn syrup) or coconut oil, drained and never used again. Good for humans and good for plants. Best option for potable water storage and water collection systems.

A tote that is food grade should be labeled "Food Grade" or "USP" (United States Pharmacopeia) and the content should be lableled (NOP) National Organic Program indicating food grade.

All totes include the course main valve thread that is easily adaptable to all tote fittings. The totes are carefully inspected and selected for best quality and condition. You will not find a tote in better like new condition than here. All totes are date stamped, used one time, scrubbed, rinsed and ready for pick up. Our SCHUTZ, GNX, and PYRAMID manufactured containers include a tote cap and main shut off valve. We also sell the best quality tote accessories.

We soak and scrub clean all of our totes inside and outside with Ginger Lily Farms botanicals plant-based dish soap formula with max grease cleaning power. Then, we sanitize the inside of the tote with some bleach, baking soda, and vinegar, and thoroughly rinse the totes.

Unfortunately, draining a tote is not an easy chore. The tote base is not designed to completely drain the tote - who knows why. You must sweep the remaining content towards the drain spout manually with a special long handled brush. Then, cleaning and sanitizing the tote is not an easy chore either. It requires special cleaning tools to reach inside the tote, cleaning agents, bending and lifting, and a lot of patience and work. The outside of the tote usually will need a good scrubbing as well. Therefore, an already cleaned tote is always a good idea.

You should never trust or depend on the said claim of content or cleanliness, you should clean the tote interior before using the tote for plant watering and sanitize the tote interior for storing or drinking water. A non food grade tote is not recommended for storing or drinking water.

To help you get started collecting water immediately, we sell the best quality tote accessories that you might need to install your tote quickly, correctly, and working - purchased from Amazon with slight mark up and guaranteed to fit and work. Including camlock and threaded adapters, sealed or vented lid caps, cap filters, garden hose adapters and overflow fittings, high flow ball valve faucets, and UV protective covers.

The Oatey Mystic 2" x 3" Rainwater Collection System is probably the best rainwater collection system for many reasons.

Rainwater totes have accessory equipment that is available for custom tank needs and specific application requirements such as different fitting and coupler attachment options. Top and bottom unloading pumps are available for water dispensing, along with hand nozzle and tubing kits for this purpose. These additional options are easily available for purchase.

Rainwater Harvesting

How Much Water Falls On Your Roof? (It is More Than You Think)

Rule of thumb: 1 inch of rain on 2,000 sq ft of roof ≈ 1,250 gallons of water.

Why that is true: An inch of rain over one square foot equals 0.623 gallons.
So, 0.623 × roof area (sq ft) × rainfall (inches) × runoff factor (often ~0.9 for metal/asphalt) ≈ gallons captured.

One inch of rain, assuming near-full capture: 1,000 sq ft ≈ 623 gallons

Rainwater Harvest Calculator measure rainwater catchment per square foot

Rainwater Collection Calculator estimate rainwater availability by state and city

What you can do with it?

Irrigate or water crops, gardens and trees
Top up wildlife or livestock troughs
Wash tools and equipment
Recharge swales or mulch basins

Simple setup considerations:

Gutters and downspout in good repair
Leaf screen and a first-flush diverter (keeps roof debris out)
Closed tank(s) on a firm, level base
Spigot or pump to move water where you need it
Overflow pipe routed away from foundations

Also good to know:

Water off typical metal/asphalt roofs is great for irrigation but not for drinking without proper treatment.
Keep tanks covered to block mosquitoes and light (avoids or slows algae build up).
Clean gutters, screens, and first-flush after storms.
Check local rules—some places have guidelines on storage or backflow prevention.

Very Important About IBC Totes

DO NOT risk poisoning someone or damaging your plants by purchasing a cheap low cost IBC tote which most likely contained hazardous chemicals or totes from an unknown source or totes which have had their original contents label removed or have been "reconditioned"! ONLY verified Food Grade IBC totes are BPA free and safe for showers, storing human or animal drinking water, and rainwater collection for edible fruits and vegetables, herbs and other plants.

WARNING: All totes are required by the FDA to provide a fixed label indicating manufacturer, date filled, grade, and shipping content. If you find a tote without a label, toxic liquid was likely stored in the container or the container is many years old or both. Not good for humans or pets and not good for plants. Not a good decision to purchase or use a tote without a food grade label for human, animal or plant consumption or purpose!
