A food-grade IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote offers several benefits over traditional storage and transport methods. These totes are specifically designed for the safe storage and transport of food, ensuring that the product remains safe for consumption. Safe for drinking water storage and for watering edible fruits and vegetables.
A 275 Gallon Food Grade IBC Tote is the ideal solution for a water collection or storage or liquid storage or transfer system. A 275 gallon tote will store and provide 5 or 6 times the volume of water than a standard 50 gallon rainwater barrel and costs less than one rainwater barrel. A 275 Gallon IBC Tote ( plastic bottle within a metal cage) measures about 46"H x 40"W x 48"L and weighs about 120 pounds empty and be easily moved around by one person.
We use totes to water our potted plants and gardens because they capture and store a lot more rain water than barrels. We use high flow valves for maximum water flow to save time, we cover our totes with a uv protector to prevent algae build up and prolong the life of the plastic bottle, and we use tote cap water filters to collect the cleanest rain water possible.
Our totes are in like new condition, high quality, food grade, clearly labeled, contained organic caster oil (corn syrup) or coconut oil, used one time, emptied and never used again. Good for humans and good for plants. Best option for potable water storage and water collection systems.
A tote that is food grade should be labeled "Food Grade" or "USP" (United States Pharmacopeia) and the content should be lableled (NOP) National Organic Program indicating food grade.
All of our totes include the course main valve thread that is strong, reliable, and easily adaptable to all tote fittings. All of our totes are carefully inspected and selected for best quality and condition. All of our totes are date stamped, used one time, scrubbed, rinsed and ready for pick up. Our SCHUTZ, GNX, and PYRAMID manufactured containers include a tote cap and coarse threaded main shut off valve.
We drain, soak, and scrub clean all of our totes inside and outside with Ginger Lily Farms botanicals plant-based dish soap formula with max grease cleaning power. Then, we sanitize the inside of the tote with some bleach, baking soda, and vinegar, and thoroughly rinse the totes.
Tote Accessories:
We sell (or recommend) the best quality tote accessories that you might need to install your tote quickly, correctly, and working - purchased from Amazon with slight mark up and guaranteed to fit and work. Including camlocks and threaded adapters, sealed or vented lid caps, cap filters, garden hose adapters and overflow fittings, high flow ball valve handle and butterfly faucets, and UV protective covers.
The Oatey Mystic 2" x 3" Rainwater Collection System is probably the best rainwater collection system for many reasons. Or, you can use PVC reducer couplings under the gutter opening for 2" x 3" or 3" x 4" spouting to 2" PVC to your tote cap filter available at your local hardware store.
How Much Water Falls On Your Roof? (it is more than you might think)
One inch of rain over one square foot equals 0.623 gallons. So, 0.623 × roof area (sq ft) × rainfall (inches) × runoff factor (often ~0.9 for metal/asphalt) ≈ gallons captured. One inch of rain, assuming near-full capture: 1,000 sq ft ≈ 623 gallons
Rainwater Harvest Calculator measure rainwater catchment per square foot
Rainwater Collection Calculator estimate rainwater availability by state and city
Good To Know:
Water off a typical metal/asphalt roof is great for irrigation but not good for drinking without proper treatment.
Keep tanks covered to block mosquitoes and light (avoids or slows algae build up).
Try to incorporate filters and screens leading to your water storage container.
Clean gutters, screens, and first-flush after storms.
Check local rules—some places have guidelines on storage or backflow prevention.
Very Important About IBC Totes
You should never trust or depend on the said claim of content or cleanliness, you should clean the tote interior before using the tote for plant watering and sanitize the tote interior for storing or drinking water. A non food grade tote is not recommended for storing or drinking water.
DO NOT risk poisoning someone or damaging your plants by purchasing a cheap low cost IBC tote which most likely contained hazardous chemicals or totes from an unknown source or totes which have had their original contents label removed or have been "reconditioned"! ONLY verified Food Grade IBC totes are BPA free and safe for showers, storing human or animal drinking water, and rainwater collection for edible fruits and vegetables, herbs and other plants.
WARNING: All totes are required by the FDA to provide a fixed label indicating manufacturer, date filled, grade, and shipping content. If you find a tote without a label, toxic liquid was likely stored in the container or the container is many years old or both. Not good for humans or pets and not good for plants. Not a good decision to purchase or use a tote without a food grade label for human, animal or plant consumption or purpose!
